The future is racing towards drivers at an incredibly quick, AMG®-stylized pace. The recently released Mercedes-Benz Hyperscreen in the Mercedes-EQ lineup is as innovative as it is impressive, but that is not the only technological advancement that Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-EQ has up their sleeve. Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-EQ have teamed up with Unity Technologies to replace the existing MBUX Infotainment platform on all Mercedes-Benz models starting in 2024. The new replacement technology is called the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS.

This collaboration will be a titan of pooled effort. Meet Unity Technologies, primarily a video game software development company. Visual artists create incredible Real-Time 3D (RT3D) and Real-Time 2D (RT2D) content for mobile, tablets, PCs, consoles, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices. If the system has graphics, Unity Technologies can craft beautiful work. Unity Technologies has crafted over 24 award-winning games, films and VR/AR experiences. Unity Technologies powers 70% of all current mobile games, this impressive company is also the leader in augmented and virtual reality technology.

Mercedes-Benz will be utilizing the Unity Industrial Collection by Unity Technologies to create a brand new, re-imagined user experience and interface for the digital cockpit in every Mercedes-Benz model starting in 2024. Newly-imagined designs will paint a wide stroke of digital luxury in the instrument cluster, infotainment system and passenger displays. Magnus Ostberg, the Chief Software Officer for Mercedes-Benz, wants to achieve 3 things with the Mercedes-Benz Operating System:

  1. Shape the User Interface specifically for the luxury that is the Mercedes-Benz brand
  2. Create bidirectional communication with the customers
  3. Integrate the digital lifestyle of customers into the vehicle’s fitment.

Mr. Ostberg emphasizes the goal of “Digital Luxury.” Every 2024 Mercedes-Benz will be linked to the Cloud and to the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things (IoT) encompasses sensors, processing systems and softwares that connect and exchange data, similarly and including smart products. The Mercedes-Benz sedans, coupes, SUVs and roadsters that we all love will be utilized to their highest potential through the Cloud by constantly scanning and assessing effortlessly.

There are four main areas that are linked up to the IoT: the powertrain, autonomous driving, infotainment and the body/comfort systems of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. It seems like a match made in heaven to combine and innovate these features in such a brilliant way. With the capabilities to constantly scan and assess, both the exterior and interior of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles will wholeheartedly emit digital luxury.

New visualizations create an extremely realistic representation of the actual world, resulting in safer driving and more content, relaxed drivers. Not only will we all be seeing high quality renders of the real world, but from the virtual world as well. In 2024, the Mercedes-Benz Operating System will come with audio and video streaming, an immersive gaming experience, messaging applications, augmented reality and artificial intelligence that will adjust vehicle settings based on owner habits as well as owner preferences.

The MB.OS was previewed in the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX Concept vehicle in January of 2022 on the Mercedes Me Media Online Platform. While showing off the complex, 3D generated images, these ideas have never been done before in the car industry. Using a video game engine to format and power the gorgeous setting (the electronic dashboard) on the Mercedes-Benz EQXX by Mercedes-EQ is what Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer for Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, considers the “X-Factor” for this concept star.

Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown can only anticipate what else is in store for the Mercedes-Benz Operating Software. The MB.OS is thoughtfully designed, with incredibly talented minds behind all of the system’s features. Mercedes-EQ has not cut any corners in regards to their innovative and collaborative effort. Despite the unexplored territory of collaborating with video game engines and engineers, Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-EQ confidently know exactly where to look for answers when presented with a challenge. With the help of Unity Technologies, Mercedes-EQ is headed in step toward an out-of-this-world daily commute. Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown can feel the excitement building for not only more Mercedes-Benz EVs, but for even more innovative and redesigned features as the EV models go from the showroom, to the streets. As time relentlessly races ahead, Unity Technologies will be there to assist Mercedes-EQ in the new digital age of our beautiful, always-developing world and vehicles.
